Winter Fracture — A Flickr Explore Moment
White / Black / Amber
Sometimes the simplest winter scenes end up being the most striking.
I photographed this moment during a winter walk along Toronto’s waterfront at Lake Ontario in late February. Fresh snow had settled across the frozen surface, but a narrow fracture cut through the ice, revealing dark water below. A warm reflection of light glowed through the opening — a small moment of colour against an otherwise quiet winter landscape.
Not long after uploading the image to Flickr, it was selected for Flickr Explore, the platform’s daily showcase highlighting photographs gaining attention from the global photography community. It reached #81 out of 500 photos on March 4, 2026
One detail I love in this frame is the small set of animal tracks crossing the snow along the edge of the fracture — a subtle reminder that even in the stillness of winter, life is moving across the landscape.
Moments like this are part of what I enjoy most about photographing Toronto: finding small, quiet scenes that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
